Writing

Sentence Construction
I know that a sentence is one complete thought. 
When I write I check that each sentence tells what is happening and who or what is doing it.
I know why I start each sentence with a capital letter and end with an endmark like a period.
I know how to write these kinds of sentences and use the correct endmark.
    1.  Statement .
     2.  Question ?
    3.  Exclamation !
    4.  Command .
I know how to join 2 sentences with and, but, & or.
I know how to use words like: but, if, as, than, after, and while correctly in a sentence.
Parts of Speech
I know what a noun is and how to i.d. one.
I know what an action verb is and how to i.d. one.
I can i.d. other verbs, like linking verbs and helping verbs
I know what an adjective is and how to i.d. one.
I know what a pronoun is and how to i.d. one.
I know what a preposition is and how to i.d. one.
I know what an adverb is and how to i.d. one.
I know what a conjunction is and how to i.d. one.
Composition
I can write a proper sentence.
I can write related sentences.
I can write a paragraph with a beginning a middle and an end.
I know what the writing process is.
I pre-write to plan my writing by using the correct planning sheet.
I know the elements I need for an informative-narrative.
I know the elements I need for an informative report.
I know the elements of a narrative story.
I use my plan as I write to make sure I have included everything I need to.
After I write, I revise my writing by checking that it makes sense, I have described things well and that the story is in the right order.
After I write, edit my writing by making sure that: everything is spelled correctly, the grammar is correct and that I didn't start too many sentences the same way.
I can make a good copy of my writing to display on the bulletin board, put in a book or on the class website.
I can write a story with at least 3 paragraphs about myself or someone I know.
I can write an information report on something I know about.
I can do research on a topic and write a report about it with an opening paragraph and a conclusion.

 

Spelling Quarter 1

I can name all the vowels.
I can name all the consonants.
I know what a syllable is and that each syllable has to have a vowel.
I can say all the sounds of all the consonants.
I can say all the sounds of all the vowels.
I can explain rule # 1 about qu.
 I can explain rule # 2 about when c says its second sound.
I can explain rule d.# 3 about when g says its second sound.
I can explain rule # 4 about vowels at the end of a syllable.
I can explain rule # 5 about i and y at the end of a syllable.
I can explain rule # 6 about y, not i at the end of a word. 
I can explain about the 5 kinds of silent e (rule #7 ):
     1. e makes the vowel say its name.
     2. English words can't end in v or u 
     3. e makes c and g say their second sound.
     4. e gives the last syllable a vowel
     5. e has no job but we have to add it.
I can say phonograms (sounds) # 27 - #33
I can spell 100 words in sections A-G. 
I can say phonograms # 34 - #43
I know the 5 ways to spell the sound er. (rule # 8)
I can spell the 73 words in section H

Reading

Literary Appreciation
I know what to look for to tell if am reading good quality writing.:
   1.  The author uses words that tell about everything so much that I can imagine it in my mind.
   2.  The story makes me feel strongly about the characters and the story.
   3.  In non-fiction writing, the information is given in a clear way that helps me to understand it.
   4.  The story explains how the characters feel and what happens because of that.
   5.   The story will be of interest to many people.
Writing for Different Purposes
I know some of the different purposes for writing:
   1. To inform or explain
   2.  To entertain or help understand 
   3.  To inform in an interesting way.

Informative Narrative
I know that the purpose of an informative narrative is to inform in an interesting way.
I know five things that an informative narrative might have.:
   1.  Topic

   3.  Setting
   4.  Plot
   5. Information
Narrative Elements - Fiction
I know that the purpose of a narrative is to entertain or help understand.
I know five things that a narrative story has.:
   1.  Main Character (s)
  2.  Supporting Characters (usually)
  3.  Setting
  4.  Plot
  5.  Point of View - Author uses 'I' or 'he/she'
Informative Elements - Non-fiction
I know four things that an informative piece of writing has:
   1. Topic
   2.  Main Idea
   3.  Information
   4.  Concluding Sentence
Fluent and Expressive Reading
I know why I need to read fluently and expressively.
I read exactly what the author has written.
I use puncutation to know what words to read together.
I speak clearly so that everyone can hear and understand what the author is trying to tell us.
I change the way I say the words to show which character is talking and how they feel.
Reading Comprehension
I know and can use the 5 mental actions needed to easily understand what I am reading. 
   1.  Check for understanding.  I understand all the words.
   2.  Make connections to what I already know.
   3.  Make predictions about what will happen or what I am supposed to learn.
   4.  Making sense of the writing for me. What do I understand about what I have read?
5.  Retell the main idea or main things that happened in the story.
