Do You Know?
Our first unit in Social Studies this year is Communities.  We will learn what a community is, what people do there and why people want to live in a community.  We will also learn about different sizes of communities.  In the second part of the unit we will learn why communities are located where they are.  we will look at  why they grow and change and what happens because of that.

In second quarter we will study mapping skills.  Cardinal directions, making a map, following a map and learning about different map symbols are all part of this unit.

In quarter 3 we will study inventions that changed the way we live and the people who invented them.  We will concentrate on why there was a need for the invention, how it changed people's lives and what it meant for the future.  The electric light bulb, the telephone, the automobile, the single chip micro processor and the internet are part of this unit.  We will also do an independent research project on an invention of the student's choice.
