About Outcomes These are the skills that your son will be learning in Language Arts in 2nd Grade.  All the skills are listed, for the most part in order of instruction.  The ones at the beginning of the list were learned in Grade 1 and will be reinforced and practiced in Grade 2.  Next in order are the skills to be mastered this year and the final skills are merely introduced and will provide a foundation for Grade 3.

Spelling Quarter 1
I can name all the vowels.
I can name all the consonants.
I know what a syllable is and that each syllable has to have a vowel.
I can say all the sounds of all the consonants.
I can say all the sounds of all the vowels.
I can explain rule # 1 about qu.
 I can explain rule # 2 about when c says its second sound.
I can explain rule d.# 3 about when g says its second sound.
I can explain rule # 4 about vowels at the end of a syllable.

Literary Appreciation
I know what to look for to tell if am reading good quality writing.:
   1.  The author uses words that tell about everything so much that I can imagine it in my mind.
   2.  The story makes me feel strongly about the characters and the story.
   3.  In non-fiction writing, the information is given in a clear way that helps me to understand it.
   4.  The story explains how the characters feel and what happens because of that.
   5.   The story will be of interest to many people.
Writing for Different Purposes
I know some of the different purposes for writing:
   1. To inform or explain

   3.  To inform in an interesting way.

Sentence Construction
I know that a sentence is one complete thought. 
When I write I check that each sentence tells what is happening and who or what is doing it.
I know why I start each sentence with a capital letter and end with an endmark like a period.
I know how to write these kinds of sentences and use the correct endmark.

I know how to join 2 sentences with and, but, & or.
I know how to use words like: but, if, as, than, after, and while correctly in a sentence.
Parts of Speech

I use my plan as I write to make sure I have included everything I need to.
After I write, I revise my writing by checking that it makes sense, I have described things well and that the story is in the right order.
After I write, edit my writing by making sure that: everything is spelled correctly, the grammar is correct and that I didn't start too many sentences the same way.
I can make a good copy of my writing to display on the bulletin board, put in a book or on the class website.
I can write a story with at least 3 paragraphs about myself or someone I know.
I can write an information report on something I know about.
I can do research on a topic and write a report about it with an opening paragraph and a conclusion.
